A Few Good Men

Movie Index Reference Set

[This is a large page and may take time to load completely.]

Following are movie clips that are used in a variety of articles. When the articles were first written, using so many movie references was not contemplated, so it is only starting to be reverse-indexed for convenience of readers. This index allows a reader to find an interesting movie clip and review back into the article or articles from which it is sourced. If a clip does not have an index, then it is not yet attached to source. Some of the new or revised links will automatically open to a new tab, which is the preferred evolution. This task is still in process.

If you want to see all the articles that have movies in the post, try the Categories Dropdown (select Movies) or try the Tags Dropdown (select the Movie_ prefix).

As more and more movies are continued to be placed here, I recognize that something in the movie clips might be offensive to you; although I certainly hope that this is not the case, since I have taken the position that it is very difficult to offend a true intellectual. [GRZUID199] Rather, my hope is that these movie gems inspire a new generation of critically thoughtful cinephiles. Comedy and satire—perhaps offensive—are important components of free-thought, expression, and social commentary. So let us not be hypocritical to conscience. Watch for spoilers. Thank you for reading.

Current Winner, Tie: The Princess Bride and The Crazy Ones with Six References. Seems reasonable, life is hard, and be your unique self: both core concepts. {“Truth is a dish best served cold” does not qualify because it is not externally sourced…}

A Few Good Men [Rob Reiner] [MUID1X]

A Few Good Men [Rob Reiner] [MUID1X] – You Can’t Handle the Truth {Spoiler Alert} [Ed. Note: This little clip is sublime with regard to the philosophical question of self-destruction by goodness, or whether systemic justice will defeat itself. Or, as set forth in various articles, “Civility destroyed by civility.”]

[GRZUID80], [GRZUID178], [GRZUID205] ~

The Princess Bride [MUID2X]

The Princess Bride [MUID2X] – Life Is Pain [Ed. Note: This is one of the greatest stories ever told, masterfully expressed by Director Rob Reiner with an all-star cast. This expression is a masterclass of telling a story.]

[GRZUID76], [GRZUID145], [GRZUID178], [GRZUID205], [GRZUID207] ~

Braveheart [MUID3X]

Braveheart [MUID3X] – Hold [Ed. Note: Discipline is holding when we want to attack, courage is attacking when we want to hold. Wisdom decides, justice harmonizes.]

[GRZUID83], [GRZUID219] ~

American Pie [MUID4X]

American Pie [MUID4X] – To “Love” Your Pie [Ed. Note: The Greek is much more clear. Greek has different words for “love” that express different concepts, which inherently requires a child to make philosophical decisions before communicating. “I loved the pie” in English is ambiguous, or vague.]

[GRZUID98_102] ~

Family Guy [MUID5X]

Family Guy [MUID5X] – The Whom Owl

[GRZUID46], [GRZUID47] ~

Lord of the Rings [MUID6X]

Lord of the Rings [MUID6X] – The Pity of Bilbo to Frodo, Gollum’s Purpose

[GRZUID28X], [GRZUID98_15] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID7X]

Game of Thrones [MUID7X] – Judgment and Swinging the Sword [Ed. Note: The suggested reason is because the judge should not displace responsibility for bearing the burden of implementing the judgment. It is participating first-hand in the punishment that provides the meting judicious empathy that the sentence is appropriate and necessary. Judging without personally participating in the sentencing does not complete the test for empathy. Judgment may be the “easier” part of the justice, which is completed with the sentencing.]

[GRZUID178] ~

Princess Bride [Rob Reiner] [MUID8X]

Princess Bride [Rob Reiner] [MUID8X] – The Battle of Wits {Spoiler Alert}

[GRZUID178]

Star Trek [MUID9X]

Star Trek [MUID9X] – Wrath of Khan-Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold [Ed. Note: I reference this in multiple articles as, “Truth is a dish best served cold,” so it’s really corollary reference.]

[GRZUID40], [GRZUID98_54], [GRZUID145], [GRZUID178], [GRZUID205], [GRZUID207] ~

Misery [Rob Reiner] [MUID10X]

Misery [Rob Reiner] [MUID10X] – Hobbling [Ed. Note: Notice subtle (or not) use of the Cross on her neckless, and “God I love you.” The things we do for love, and how emotion deludes us…]

[GRZUID178] ~

A Man for All Seasons [MUID12X]

A Man for All Seasons [MUID12X] – To Give the Devil the Benefit of Law [Ed. Note: This Academy Award-winning gem provides the capstone universal foundation for justice. We need to preserve law when we want to attack, because we need the law to be preserved when we must defend. The wind blows one way but then comes back around. Separation of Church and State finds its source in this concept. The United States Constitution is agnostic to god-religion-dogma by intentional design to protect the “circle of justice.” It is the socio-political Golden Rule.]

[GRZUID61], [GRZUID147], [GRZUID194], [GRZUID197], [GRZUID198] ~

Apple Advertisement (Jobs Version) [MUID125X]

Apple Advertisement (Jobs Version) [MUID125X] – The Crazy Ones [Ed. Note: Often overlooked, the Apple “Think Different” advertisement is a contradiction to proper grammar. The verb requires an adverb as the qualifier. It should be “Think Differently,” so the advertisement itself exemplifies its own message.]

[GRZUID46][GRZUID47], [GRZUID151], [GRZUID199], [GRZUID205], [GRZUID223] ~

Anthony Jeselnik [MUID126X]

Anthony Jeselnik [MUID126X] – Best of Anthony Jeselnik

[GRZUID210], [GRZUID223] ~

Anthony Jeselnik [MUID13X]

Anthony Jeselnik-His Diagnosis as a Comedian [Ed. Note: The rise of the modern psychologist may be fairly considered in a framework of projection.]

[GRZUID210], [GRZUID223] ~

Patton [MUID14X]

Patton [MUID14X] – Battle Fatigue-The Patton Slap [The quintessential “Objective-Based Leader.” “Lead, follow, or get out of the way.” You help achieving the objective, you hurt achieving the objective, or you are irrelevant. It’s not complicated. It is priority focus to an objective, and determination.]

[GRZUID80], [GRZUID162], [GRZUID208] ~

Steve Jobs [MUID15X]

Steve Jobs [MUID15X] – Acknowledge Apple II [Ed. Note: It is easy to join in on Woz’s perspective, and all news and social media will tug on our heartstrings. But consider the key phrase, It’s not a luncheon, which exposes that the event has one focused purpose—one primary objective—one context—and anything diverting from the mission objective is a risk to achieving the mission objective. Goal posts don’t move. The articles take the position that Jobs was correct, although perhaps not feel-good likeable for it.]

[GRZUID98_113], [GRZUID162], [GRZUID208] ~

Trump and Miss Universe [MUID17X]

Trump and Miss Universe [MUID17X] – Trump and Miss Universe [Ed. Note: “How did it make you feel?” is no part of the primary objective for the defined role. Rhetoric moves audience focus away from the primary objective. However distasteful, some frameworks of the context do not allow the beauty-contestant winner to have the cake and to eat it, too.]

[GRZUID208] ~

City Slickers [MUID18X]

City Slickers [MUID18X] – The One Thing [Ed. Note: The one thing, when clearly defined, is the thing to which all else yields.]

[GRZUID208] ~

[GRZUID208] ~

Pumping Iron [MUID21X]

Pumping Iron [MUID21X] – Pumping Iron-Arnold on Being a Champion [Ed. Note: Arnold identifies the pain as the critical mass threshold. Not getting through the point is absolute failure, getting through the point is only possible success. The “weed-out.”]

[GRZUID207] ~

John Adams [MUID22X]

John Adams [MUID22X] – Abigail Adams, Politics

[GRZUID223] ~

Martin Luther [MUID23X]

Martin Luther [MUID23X] – Argument Leipzig – Right of Conscience [See MUID154X] [Ed. Note: “Are you the only one who knows the truth?” begs the question. For empirical science, the truth can be replicated and predicted, empirically. For matters of conscience, each person is entitled to the right of conscience, which is the seat of god, such as god (or the gods) may be.]

[GRZUID46][GRZUID47], [GRZUID170], [GRZUID220], [GRZUID221] ~

2001 Space Odyssey [Stanley Kubrick] [MUID24X]

2001 Space Odyssey [Stanley Kubrick] [MUID24X] – 2001 Space Odyssey: The Dawn of Man [Ed. Note: Kubrick’s genius: Look for the evolved weapon at the end of the clip. Only the weapons evolve, not human nature.]

[GRZUID24], [GRZUID141], [GRZUID145], [GRZUID151] ~

Martin Luther King, Jr. [MUID25X]

Martin Luther King, Jr. [MUID25X] – Mike Douglas Show – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. [Ed. Note: The calm and cool sophisticated elevated savvy of King. He was no ordinary rebel, but a man of profundity deserving of a day of national recognition.]

[GRZ221] ~

Martin Luther King, Jr. [MUID26X]

Martin Luther King, Jr. [MUID26X] – Final Speech [Almost as if he knew his assassination would be immediately forthcoming.]

[GRZ221] ~

Shark Tale [MUID27X]

Shark Tale [MUID27X] – You’re a Good Person [Ed. Note: A funny little clip, but profound in exposition of conscience and who is “good” and relativity of morals.]

[GRZ220] ~

The Is Spinal Tap [Rob Reiner] [MUID28X]

The Is Spinal Tap [Rob Reiner] [MUID28X] – This Goes to 11 [Ed. Note: Sublime delusion.]

[GRZUID123] ~

Lion King [MUID33X]

Lion King [MUID33X] – It’s In the Past [Ed. Note: This gem of a scene, with staid and true old-school wisdom, was removed from the live action version for a reason.] {Spoiler Alert}

[GRZUID88], [GRZUID93], [GRZUID94] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID34X]

Game of Thrones [MUID34X] – Bronn Trial by Combat – A dead loser’s honor. [Ed. Note: The oxymoron of “Rules of War.”]

[GRZUID80], [GRZUID87], [GRZUID239] ~

The Fountainhead [MUID35X] – But I Don’t Think of You

[GRZUID74], [GRZUID98_17] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID36X] – When We Say Yes – Integrity [Ed. Note: No promises or oaths required.]

[GRZUID16], [GRZUID39] ~

Seinfeld [MUID37X]

Seinfeld [MUID37X] – Indian Episode [Comedic satire, even dark comedic satire, can expose and release social repression in a healthy way. Social constraint, by applied “psychology” asserting feigned normalcy, can be more dysfunctional than healthy functional. If what is funny in private is constrained by not to be funny in public, there is a tendency to unhealthy social dysfunction. This sublime clip releases human social tension by satire, particularly to be worshipped in a free-thinking society.]

[GRZUID104]

Macho Man [MUID38X]

Macho Man [MUID38X] – WWF/WWE – Nothing Means Nothing [Ed. Note: This little WWF/WWE clip with Mean Gene and Randy Savage is XY-male nonsensical genius. This clip never gets old. Mean Gene’s straight-man face and subtle sarcasm. Macho Man’s use of sophisticated terms, “I’ve been…maligned…” Comedic genius all the way around. This clip was first used in the Bud-Light marketing debacle to exemplify the true XY-male nonsense that XX-women have to deal with, being the adult man-child…and many an XY-male reserves that natural right without XX-mommy’s or XX-wife’s or any XX-woman’s repressing condemnation.] See [MUID39X].

[GRZUID142] ~

Ric Flair [MUID39X]

Ric Flair [MUID39X] – WWF/WWE – If You Want to Be the Man, You Have to Beat the Man See [MUID38X].

Legend of the Ten Rings [MUID40X]

Legend of the Ten Rings [MUID40X] – “I always bet on Asian,” and “Did America make you soft?” [Ed. Note: The shift of power, expressed by Disney, which could not be expressed, except by implied market acceptance.]

[GRZUID149] ~

Army of Darkness [Sam Raimi] [MUID41X]

Army of Darkness [Sam Raimi] [MUID41X] – “Good, Bad, I’m the Guy with the Gun” [Ed. Note: The quote subsumes all political theory. We tend to hope that right makes might, but we know that might tends to make right. And don’t miss the play on words, “Bad Ash” “Bad As*”]

[GRZUID98_133] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID42X]

Game of Thrones [MUID42X] – Kill the Boy [Ed. Note: Stop being controlled by “Likes.” Do what you believe is right. As stated in many posts, “Time will get its day.”]

Game of Thrones [MUID47X]

[GRZUID110] ~

The Devil’s Advocate [MUID48X]

The Devil’s Advocate [MUID48X] – Vanity [Ed. Note: Ben Franklin said vanity/humility/pride was the most difficult vice to eradicate, by application of “Vanity’s Paradox,” that we tend to be proud of ourselves for having accomplished the eradication of the vice.]

[GRZUID85], [GRZUID98_25], [GRZUID98_54], [GRZUID98_87] ~

Resident Alien [MUID49X]

Resident Alien [MUID49X] – You’re Not the Monkey [Ed. Note: Relative perspective. A brainwashed person is incalcitrant to empathy for any other perspective.]

[GRZUID98_82] ~

A Clockwork Orange [Stanley Kubrick] [MUID57X]

A Clockwork Orange [Stanley Kubrick] [MUID57X] – Beethoven [Ed. Note: A murderer/rapist loves Beethoven, and now he is “cured” against his nature by being made sick chemically while being forced to see Nazi violence. Unfortunately for him, Beethoven’s 9th (Ode to Joy) is the German National Anthem. “Behavioral Psycho-Therapy” at perhaps Kubrick’s darkly comical satirical best.]

[GRZUID98_90] ~

Henry V [MUID58X]

Henry V [MUID58X] – St. Crispin’s Day Speech [Shakespeare] [Ed. Note: So many famous lines in this clip. Also, an interpretative breakdown is provided here. A great video with daily morning coffee.]

[GRZUID98_92] ~

Waterloo (Napoleon) [MUID59X]

Waterloo (Napoleon) [MUID59X] – Shoot Your Emperor [Ed. Note: The unbelievable part of the story is that it is true. Only the great Napoleon could pull that off. This is the Napoleon to watch, and, for a wider view, the very approachable, Napoleon.]

[GRZUID81], [GRZUID213] ~

Waterloo (Napoleon) [MUID60X]

[GRZUID176], [GRZUID190], [GRZUID217] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID63X]

Game of Thrones [MUID63X] – “Wealth, or Fear, or Love” [Ed. Note: Notice the three separations as set forth in the referenced article. Wealth allows the grant of “reward” (self-interest) with the dichotomy of Fear (self-interest), or Love (martyrdom, or only to a point, then implicating the other two categories), as exposed in the article.]

[GRZUID98_1], [GRZUID216] ~

Game of Thrones [MUID64X]

Game of Thrones [MUID64X] – So Many Vows [Ed. Note: Competing ethical principles governed by priorities of conscience. See MUID124X.]

[GRZUID35] ~

Yellowstone [MUID65X]

Yellowstone [MUID65X] – Their Laws [Ed. Note: Culture is a form of brainwashing, in the sense that social customs are normalized on a localized basis without absolutes.]

[GRZUID148], [GRZUID189] ~

Julius Caesar-Brando [MUID66X]

Julius Caesar-Brando [MUID66X] – Away Slight Man [Shakespeare] [Ed. Note: Don’t miss it; it goes by quickly. Perhaps the greatest intellectual insult ever concisely stated, from “Honorable Brutus” to arguably corrupted and whiney Cassius, “Away, slight man,” meaning that Cassius has diminished himself and has conceded his gravitas and substance of honor. Only Shakespeare can cast such a sophisticated complex insult that efficiently.]

[GRZUID150], [GRZUID161] ~

Yellowstone [MUID67X]

Yellowstone [MUID67X] – Luck

[GRZUID98_77], [GRZUID137], [GRZUID155] ~

Waterloo (Napoleon) [MUID69X]

Waterloo (Napoleon) [MUID69X] – Feigns [Ed. Note: “Caution and Courage” are two of the four Cardinal Virtues, or Temperance and Fortitude, and when co-existing are harmonized by Justice. “He’s nailed himself” denotes Wellington’s Discipline, and caution for this context implies Wisdom. Wellington is a formidable contender who does not fall trap to the bait. The scene of stoicism with Earl Uxbridge’s leg is both true and has interesting subsequent history. (I needed to watch this sublime version again to wash out the taste from the recent Ridley Scott catastrophe.)]

[GRZUID108], [GRZUID137], [GRZUID190], [GRZUID239] ~

Julius Caesar-Heston [MUID70X]

Julius Caesar-Heston [MUID70X] – Fickle [Shakespeare] [Ed. Note: The crowd is praising Caesar today. Caesar has just defeated Pompey (the General, not Pompeii, the location). The protagonist is charging the crowd (“you blocks, you stones…”) for praising whomever is the conqueror, now Caesar, yesterday Pompey. Note the play on words (double entendre) of the leader, being a cobbler, who “is a mender of soles (souls),” and who leads others to wear out their shoes (soles, souls), out of self-interest to get himself into more work. A subtle social condemnation of leadership self-interested rather than selfless motive.]

Kung Fu [MUID73X] – Conquer Self

[GRZUID209] ~

Kung Fu [MUID74X]

Kung Fu [MUID74X] – Fear [Ed. Note: Fear melts because it is a matter of relativity to the nature of the thing that it would invade. A snowflake melts to the touch of a warm hand, but not upon another snowflake, then another.]

[GRZUID124] ~

Kung Fu [MUID75X]

Kung Fu [MUID75X] – Do Not Contend [Ed. Note: It’s the boy’s face of curiousness that caps the clip’s meaning. That is, the boy does not (yet) understand why Cain is not “naturally reacting” to what would commonly be a perceived threat over a “taking” or “intrusion.”]

Marco Polo [MUID78X]

Marco Polo [MUID78X] – Certainty of Self [Ed. Note: This is the antithesis to jumping on or joining a bandwagon. Certainty of self keeps a thing true to itself without absorbing something else, being a failure of the discipline of integrity. (See MUID109X])

[GRZUID46], [GRZUID47], [GRZUID98_48], [GRZUID148], [GRZUID60] ~

[GRZUID74] ~

Yellowstone [MUID80X]

Yellowstone [MUID80X] – Hope [Ed. Note: “Hope is the last refuge of a victim.” This is because its proper space is when there is no control option for self-determination. Hope and prayer sit in the same space. This is not to disrespect hope, but to understand it.]

Lincoln [Steven Spielberg] [MUID103X] – Trust [Ed. Note: Don’t miss the subtlety of time and logistics addressed in the conversation; it goes by quickly. Lincoln had to get the 13th Amendment passed by the states before the Confederate States were rejoined. If the Confederate States rejoined first, before the Amendment, they would have an equal right to defeat the Amendment by their reinstated right to vote. The Confederate States knew this and so tried to get back in fast, seeing the end, but Lincoln did a bit of lawyer trickery to stall the rejoinment of the Confederate States so that the 13th Amendment would be passed by the (Northern) states before the Confederates rejoined. Since the North effectively had already won the War, the Confederates were going to come back in as a fait accompli, but Lincoln masterfully cajoled the timing to end physical slavery. Yes, Honest Abe Lincoln prolonged the Civil War, in effect, to get slavery constitutionally ended first; otherwise, the Civil War would have only resolved the issue of secession and not the issue of slavery. Yes, he was that good. See “The Vote” clip.]

There is a form of entrepreneurial wisdom or genius, which is knowing when to shoot the gun, not just knowing how the technology works.]

Inversely, a “bad” person uses the authority and power without due care but for self-interest, which is the easier task of indulgence, or in some ways not a task at all.]

Philosophy is a ruleset, which can be both brutal and merciful, understanding the space and practical necessity of both. Like Lincoln, also a philosopher, Chamberlain fought with brutal bayonets, only so far as required to serve “the good.” To wit: “Chamberlain was thus responsible for one of the most poignant scenes of the American Civil War. As the Confederate soldiers marched down the road to surrender their arms and colors, Chamberlain, on his own initiative, ordered his men to come to attention and “carry arms” as a show of respect.“]

Note: Shylock is a lender to a rival Antonio, a Christian who disrespected Shylock many times simply because Shylock is Jewish. But Antonio needs a loan. The bargain was that Antonio repay the debt or give a pound of flesh (the security) instead. Antonio defaults on the loan, and the question placed to Shylock here is whether he really wants that “pound of flesh.” Shylock gives his famous soliloquy. He does not need the money, but he wants a form of justice by revenge for the insults. This is the source of the idiom “to extract a pound of flesh,” which, in this Shakespeare play, is not metaphorical, but literal. Perhaps like many of Shakespeare’s works, a must watch for every lawyer.]

The Fountainhead [MUID153X] – Public Opinion [Ed. Note: “He’s too good,” meaning that society accepts good because it’s average, but “too good” is to say that something is excellent and beyond the average “good.” The implication is that society will not allow something excellent (different by genius self-definition) to survive, because it extracts human fear, jealousy of supplantation, and envy. In short, excellence is a threat. Moreover, the average does not have the integrity and discipline to self-judge by its insecurity of self and therefore seeks external standards, “When I want my opinion, I’ll ask you for it.” Francon saying “I won’t defend it” is because the subject that self-defines by its own excellence does not need the assistance of an external defense.]

Conviction [Ed. Note: All the King’s Men required that Sir (Saint) Thomas More bend to the marital desires of the King, but personal conscience prevented him from doing so against all risks. The background is that King Henry VIII was married to Spanish Catholic Queen Catherine of Aragon (who did not yield a son, but only the daughter later to become Catholic Bloody Mary). The Catholic Pope would not consent to the divorce. On clever advice, the King decided that a king’s authority is directly from God and not through the Pope conduit, so King Henry VIII started his own Anglican Church that was much like Catholicism, but conveniently allowed divorces, didn’t concede to the Pope’s authority, with some other details, more or less important, depending upon who’s asked. Here the audience is convinced by Brutus that the “assassination” of Caesar was justice for the good of Rome, then Caesar-loyal Mark Antony flips the audience, including by using their own self-interest as beneficiaries to Caesar’s Will. But the real key to the clip is the ending, with Antony smugly saying how he had “moved” (manipulated) the weakling riotous audience against his own enemies.] See also, [MUID130X]
